The International Institute of American Studies conducts research on the United States of America, employing synthetic and interdisciplinary approaches covering history, culture, literature, politics, economics, society, religion, and music.
The International Institute also focuses on relations of the U.S.A. with other regions, as well as research into the practices of American studies in other countries. The International Institute's primary activities are to collect books and research materials related to American Studies, making them available to scholars and students, and to promulgate the results of research projects through publication and public lectures.
It also hosts roundtables, symposia, and special lectures by prominent scholars in and out of Japan in various fields. These events are for specialists in the field of American studies.
The International Institute of American Studies was established in 1958 in order to promote and promulgate various fields of study on American civilization and culture, growing out of the Kyoto American Studies Summer Seminar(1951-87).
Actually, Doshisha has been involved with the study of American civilization ever since Joseph Hardy Neesima, the founder of Doshisha, stowed away from feudal Japan in 1864 to study at Amherst College and Andover Theological Seminary. Upon his return he established the Doshisha English School in 1875.
Doshisha's early connection with the United States stimulated modern American Studies at Doshisha, as evidenced in the development of the International Institute of American Studies. In the modern era, drawing upon the rich research resources of the International Institute, the Graduate School of American Studies was launched in April 1991 as the first full-scale graduate program of American Studies in Japan.
